Library guide for Flexible Learning students

All Elizabeth College Flexible Learning students have full access to the Elizabeth College Library.

You may communicate with the library staff via

You are able to access the library’s resources from any computer which has the internet installed.

1) Elizabeth College Computers

  • Log on to computer—use your computer username (eg.john.smith.00) and your password (eg.270784) provided on your “Computer accounts for Flexible Learning Students” sheet.
  • Open Internet Explorer
  • The Elizabeth College Home Page will appear  - http://eliz.tased.edu.au
  • Click on Students
  • Click on Library—you will see all the information/services available to you — Using the library, Catalogue, Info online, Databases, Our library collections ,Contact us

2) Home / Other Computers

  • Log on to computer
  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Type in the Elizabeth College Web address— http://www.eliz.tased.edu.au —which will bring you to the Elizabeth College Home Page.
  • Click on Students
  • You will be asked to enter your username (eg.john.smith.00) and password (eg.270784) provided on your “Computer accounts for Flexible Learning Students” sheet.
  • Click on Library—you will see all the information/services available to you — Using the library, Catalogue, Info online, Databases, Our library collections , Contact us.

All Elizabeth College Flexible Learning students have full access to the Elizabeth College Library.

Catalogue

  • The catalogue lets you know what the library has, where it is and whether it is available.
  • Click on Catalogue from the EC Library Page
  • Click on ‘Click here to start
  • Click on Elizabeth College Library.
  • Type into ‘Search for’ box - be as specific as you can eg. “Australian history twentieth century”, not “History”
  • Select a search field from the drop down list beside the ’Search for’ box.  ‘All words’ is very useful as it searches across all fields.
  • Click on Submit Search button or  Enter
  • If a title appears relevant, click on the Full Record option to the left of the title.  This will take you to a more detailed outline of the item and the holdings information (where it is in the library and if it is available).

Searching the Internet

To begin a search on the internet you may:

Go to  the Elizabeth College Home Page (http://www.eliz.tased.edu.au/).

  • Click on ‘Students
  • Click on 'Library
  • Click on 'Info Online'
  • Click on 'Search the internet by Subject'

Steps: type search term in the search box

          : click on ‘Enter'
          : click on and examine the most relevant results

Tips for use: 

When using search terms do not be too general eg. type Picasso, not artists or painters

Use phrase searching eg. “world war II”

It is not case sensitive (Google only)

Magazine and newspaper Articles

How do I find magazine and newspaper articles?

  • From the magazine/newspaper itself
  • Use the Elizabeth College Databases found on the Library Home Page.
  • Go directly to the magazine or newspaper online home page, if known.

Online Databases

eLibraryfind full articles from a large range of magazines and newspapers

Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre covers different publications from eLibrary.  Not all publications offer  full text.

Some databases have free access.  There are useful links from the Library Home Page to Issues in Australian Society, Debatabase and New Internationalist.
